Mr. Spock Masculine?

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

When Gene Roddenberry created the TV series Star Trek, the suits at NBC had some advice: “Lose the Martian.”

Very interesting read. The late 60’s were a turbulent time here in the U.S. and you could see that played out in social interaction on shows of that time. One such show was Star Trek. A fascinating article over at NPR digs into the character of Spock from that series.

Star Trek Fans Do It

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Nick Cook, a 38-year-old nurse, is the producer of The Stone Unturned and the other films made by Intrepid Productions. He answers the door to his home and leads me to the kitchen where his wife, Lucita Faria, 33, is applying green and yellow make-up to the pointed rubber ears of David Reid, a 36-year-old student accommodation manager from St Andrews. Reid explains that he is playing a character who is half-human, half-Romulan. He has a brown blanket swept over one shoulder and pinned in place with a nice brooch. His Spockish eyebrows give him a wry look.

I wish I was surrounded by enough local Star Trek geeks to go about making my own fan film. Sadness ensues.

Gatchaman Inspired Sketch

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Saturday night me and the family went to Sonic “The burger joint” and we sat outside. For some reason I was thinking about G-Force, a cartoon from my childhood that I was really inspired by artistically. So I sketched this little Gatchaman inspired helmet from what I could remember. My scanner seems to be doing better…not perfect…but I think I’m getting it.

I think I will do a series of space helmet sketches…some inspired by existing and some I may just fabricate.

John Carter Of Mars

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

The Pixar Blog confirmed directly from ”Wall-E” director Andrew Stanton himself that he is indeed currently writing the script for the upcoming Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ science fiction book ”John Carter Of Mars”. - io9.com

Oh man…this movie really needs to be made. It has the potential to either be the greatest animated film of all time…or the thing that finally kills pixar’s momentum…now with that sweeping generalized statement I will use my power of hope to make the film great…mmmm….so good.
